  • Conor Burns MP Visits The Bourne Academy

    Published 29/11/18

Local MP Conor Burns visited The Bourne Academy last week. He met with a group of Year 7 and Sixth Form students. Mr Burns was introduced by a member of Youth Parliament and the session started with a short poem about what makes a good school, written by three Year 7 girls. Later Conor Burns answered a mix of personal and political questions with grace and humour, including: What’s your view on Brexit? Did you do well in school? and What made you want to become an MP?

The session ended with a mock vote on a series of three bills that would fund either developing schools, fighting crime or protecting the environment… the schools bill won! The session finished with more questions and photos.

Teacher, Mr Schmidt said “The Bourne Academy Year 7 and 6th form students were engaged and blessed with the opportunity to meet and hear from our local MP Conor Burns. We’d like to thank our MP for the opportunity to hear, honestly from a local politician, about life in Parliament, national issues and personal reflections on how to achieve. The session was as informative as it was inspirational.” All students were fully engaged in the session and were delighted by the experience.

  • Baroness Rock Visits The Bourne Academy

    Published 29/11/18

The Bourne Academy is delighted to have recently welcomed House of Lords member, Baroness Kate Rock and successful local business woman Katushka Giltsoff as guest speakers. The pair gave inspirational talks to our business studies students through the ‘Speakers for Schools’ forum, sharing their personal life stories and encouraging our students to work hard and follow their passions.

Baroness Rock who sits on the House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence was able to share her insights on the skills needed for future careers. The students asked thought provoking questions and felt reassured that the robots would not be stealing our jobs just yet! Kate said it was a pleasure to meet our students and visit our inspirational school.

Katushka shared her journey working globally as a stockbroker and now as a highly successful headhunter. Both speakers live in Dorset and it was a pleasure to meet them and see them inspire our students further.

Careers Leader, Vicky Woodings, said “It was wonderful to have such passionate guest speakers who gave up their time to share their personal stories and inspire our students to follow their own dreams and ambitions. Katushka and Kate were a delight and excellent role models for any girls keen to enter male dominated businesses”.
