SaLPS

Students as Learning Partners (SaLPs)

SaLPs (or student as learning partners) is a fantastic initiative that allows students and staff to co-create and co-teach lessons which in turn benefit the needs of the pupils in the room. SaLPs have the unique and insightful opportunity to shape learning for their peers offering new planning methods to support pupils learning whilst also giving the SaLP themselves a greater confidence and understanding into the world of teaching and learning.

As part of the initiative, all subject areas invite at least two KS3 students to work in tandem with a department teacher in their year group. Students interested in this process sign up during tutor and are then organised and trained by Mr Elliot Pottle. As part of this training, all SaLPs are required to sign a SHORT (sensitivity, honesty, openness, respect, trust) agreement.

The teachers then meet with their SaLP in an agreed time whereby they work together to co-plan a lesson ensuring student voice within the classroom. The student and teacher then co-teach the lesson at a later date and review this lesson focusing on steps moving forward and where success is tangibly seen.

As part of the process, all SaLPs then meet with Mr Pottle to discuss how their lessons went and how their contributions created a positive learning environment for the pupils.

This process runs twice within the academic year to allow for a greater participation or pupils and greater student voice within the academy and across all curriculum areas.
