The Bourne Academy is delighted to be nationally recognised and applauded by Sport England, for its successful model of Community Lettings. This follows a successful project driven by Active Dorset.
In Phase 1 of the Opening Schools Facilities project, Active Dorset was one of 19 pilot projects commissioned by Sport England to deliver the Opening Schools Facilities project between October 2019 and December 2020, as outlined in the Government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan July 2019.
During that time, Active Dorset co-produced a case study about The Bourne Academy’s successful journey to increase the opening up of school facilities out of hours. Sport England wanted to share good practice and learning from Phase 1, so this February they commissioned the Active Partnership network to create a series of short animated videos of a few case studies. We’re very proud to say that The Bourne Academy’s case study was selected for this and the film is able to be viewed online, link here. The Bourne Academy is proud of its collaboration with Active Partnership in engaging with the community and transforming lives through sport and physical activity.
The Bourne Academy has become fully established as a community hub and is held in high regard within the community. The Bourne Academy was selected to be the base of the Dorset’s first Police Cadet Unit in 2019. The Academy has also hosted bespoke events such as weddings, conferences and high-profile events such as a recording of BBC Radio 4s Kitchen Cabinet.
The Academy has state of the art facilities, including a multi-use games area (MUGA), dance studio, cookery classrooms, media suite and various sporting facilities. These facilities are available to be hired by community clubs, for functions, parties, or corporate events.
If you are interested in hiring The Bourne Academy’s facilities, you can find morn information on their website, www.thebourneacademy.com/communitylettings
The Bourne Academy is delighted to have completed a 6040 mile virtual journey to partner, Osiligi Obaya Primary School in Kenya. Staff and Students have travelled this distance by walking, running, cycling, inline skating, rowing, playing football and Pokémon go, swimming and skateboarding.
In light of National Lockdown and worldwide travel restrictions, The Bourne Academy launched a virtual challenge to make the journey from Bournemouth to its partner school in Kenya. The aim was for staff and students, to clock up the 6040 mileage from Hadow Road, Bournemouth to the Osiligi Obaya School in Kenya, using any mode of sustainable transport they wish.
Those taking part have not only completed the virtual journey, taking them through 12 countries in Europe and Africa, but they have also travelled so far over the target mileage that they could have also made it to South Africa…
‘Osiligi’ means hope, and the hope for this project is to bring us all a little closer together in a time when the world feels very disconnected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mark Avoth, Principal, commented: ‘We are so proud of everyone who has taken part in the virtual challenge. This journey has been so inspiring to our community and encouraged our students to get out and exercise during the second lockdown. The project has also kept our partner school, Osiligi Obaya, in the forefront of our minds during the pandemic and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to this massive group effort’.
The Bourne Academy is delighted to have launched their first Girls Active group in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust. The Programme aims to increase participation in Sport and Physical Activity across the Academy, but particularly for girls.
Year 8 students were selected for the group, as this is the age range where physical activity tends to decrease in girls. The group has shown so much enthusiasm for the project and called themselves GALS, standing for Girls Active Leaders Squad. GALS have created their own brand and logo as well as establishing an after-school sports club – the students are proving to be excellent role models for school sport.
Mark Avoth, Principal, says ‘We are so proud of the group and the initiative, the GALS are a real inspiration to all our students’.
The Bourne Academy is delighted and extremely grateful to local company, Summit Land & Developments, for the donation of four brand new laptops. The laptops were distributed during the most recent national lockdown, to help the Academies families in need.
Caroline Gobell, Business Director at The Bourne Academy, said: ‘We were absolutely thrilled and grateful to have received these donated laptops from Summit Land & Developments. The Laptops made a huge difference to some of our students who had limited access to remote learning while working from home. Many families struggled during the national lockdown and these laptops proved to be lifelines, taking the pressure off family life as a whole, as well as preventing the widening of a gap between those children with enough resources at home, and those with nothing. This sort of difference is lifechanging’.

Those taking part have travelled these distances by walking, running, cycling, inline skating, rowing, playing football and Pokémon go, swimming and skateboarding. Staff and students have already clocked up over 3000 miles since Christmas, virtual journeying through France, Spain, Algeria and Niger. The journey is being plotted on a giant map in the Academy’s Reception, with regular updates on social media and via the Academy news bulletin to our whole community.
The Bourne Academy received a special 10 Year Anniversary congratulations from their Kenyan partner school, as this year The Bourne Academy is celebrating ten years since becoming an Academy. The Bournemouth school has been supporting the Osiligi Obaya Primary School in the Maasai Warrior community in Kenya since 2011, with the key objective of assisting the community to become more economically active, helping them to help themselves, whilst not changing their beautiful culture.
There have also been many fundraising drives over the years, including regular MUFTI days and, in 2016-2017 raising £5000 to build a new teachers’ house called ‘The Bourne Academy House’.
Caroline Gobell, Business Director, commented: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be launching this new year challenge for our whole community to join in with. The 6040 mile journey is inspiring us all in so many ways: chasing away the winter blues, bringing our community further together during a 2nd national lockdown and raising awareness of our partner school, of whom we are extremely proud. We are giving out various prizes at the end of this journey and so far there seems to be some very healthy competition between staff v students for the most mileage, or most unusual mode of transport!’.
Drilling Systems has donated ten laptops to The Bourne Academy in Bournemouth to help students learn from home.
Following an IT upgrade, Drilling Systems had a number of spare laptops, all with Windows 10, webcams and microphones to support home learning, and donated them to the Bourne Academy’s students. Drilling Systems is a world-leader in simulation. The company develops and manufactures real time training simulators for the oil and gas markets from its Bournemouth base and exports them all over the world.
The Academy has now distributed these donated laptops to students most in need. Caroline Gobell, Business Director at The Bourne Academy, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be lucky enough to receive these donated laptops from Drilling Systems, who got in touch with us via our sponsors Canford School, and we are extremely grateful to the company for thinking of us. The laptops have made a massive difference to some of our students who have had limited access to remote learning from home during this pandemic. Many families have struggled, and these laptop lifelines have taken the pressure off family life as a whole, as well as prevent the gap widening between those children with enough resources at home, and those with nothing. Clive Battisby, head of simulation at 3t Energy Group, which includes Drilling Systems, said: “As a global technology company committed to improving human performance, we wanted to help support local families struggling with remote learning during the current pandemic. Hopefully our donation will make life a little easier for some of The Bourne Academy’s students and help them keep pace with their peers.”
Talented musical students at The Bourne Academy are hosting lockdown Rock Concerts online – Rockdown Sessions.
When the UK Government announced school closures and another national lockdown, The Bourne Academy’s music department decided that this would not stop musical performances for their students. The Academy was due to have held concert performances, but with social distancing measures still in place for the foreseeable future, the events have not been able to take place in the traditional sense, so following the success of The Academies previous online concerts in April & May of last year, they have two more wonderful performances via Facebook Live.
Students have once again been rehearsing and recording performances at home. The videos are then put together by Academy staff to create a concert; the previous concerts reached almost 1000 views in the first hour and led to many more engagements and positive comments from the Academy community.
‘Rockdown Sessions’ give a brilliant opportunity for students to continue developing their performance skills while in lockdown and a chance to share their work with families, staff and peers. The music department has been inundated with so many fantastic performance videos that the concert is taking place over two nights, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 February.
Head of Visual and Performing Arts, David Mastrocola says ‘’We are all incredibly proud of the students for taking part in what has been a very difficult time for all of us. Hopefully these concerts will give the students, staff, and their families, a degree of escapism for a couple of hours where they can enjoy watching themselves and their peers perform.’’
The Bourne Academy is extremely proud of Sixth Form student Kate Walker who has taken part in a Canadian online music festival. Kate was approached by the festival’s hosts KB Radio, following her success with song ‘There For You’ and eight other songs she wrote, reaching the top 10 in the online radio station’s music charts in 2017.
Kate credits The Bourne Academy with boosting her confidence in Performing Arts
‘Mr Mastrocola and the Academy have had an incredible impact on my life. The teachers genuinely love what they do. The Performing Arts and Music departments have boosted my confidence incredibly, the effect they have on the students is remarkable’.
Kate hopes to continue onto a career in Performing Arts when she completes her studies, she currently studies Music, Dance and Drama at The Bourne Academy Sixth Form. The music festival is being streamed online via the KB Radio website and on their social media pages, with Kate’s performance being streamed on Saturday 13 February.
