  • The Bourne Academy Delighted with 2019 GCSE Results ​​​​​​​

    The Bourne Academy, an all ability state-funded secondary Academy established by its sponsor Canford School in 2010, is delighted to announce another outstanding set of examination results, both in terms of grades and levels of progress achieved.

    Mark Avoth, Principal, said “I am delighted to say that The Bourne Academy has, once again, achieved a positive Progress 8 score. Our English 9 to 4 grade results have exceeded 70% for the fifth year running.  Further congratulations should go to our Religious Studies students who achieved over 50% 9 to 7 grades. Well done everyone!’

  • Class of 1999 Reunited after 20 years!

    The Kingsleigh School class of 1999 met in July for a 20-year reunion. The Reunion took place at The Bourne Academy, formerly known as Kingsleigh School. The event was well attended by students and the group’s Head of Year, Mr Williams.

    The group was taken on a tour of the site and while many areas of the old Kingsleigh School still stands, so much has changed over the last 20 years since they were students. The school, now an Academy has grown to make way for more than double the amount of students as in 1999.

    The event was organised by current Academy teacher/Head of House, Affolake Lewis, who herself was a former student having left the school in 1999. She says, ‘Thank you to everyone who attended, it was so fantastic to see you all - great to catch up and share memories’.

    The Academy Alumni Association was launched in 2015, and welcomes former students who attended the school, whether it was East Howe, Kingsleigh, Kings High School or The Bourne Academy when they attended.

    ‘I am so pleased with the event and would love to hold more reunions. If there are any students out there from the class of 2000 please get in touch so that we can organise another event for next year!’ asks Gemma Holden, Alumni Coordinator.  ‘We would love to hear from any/all former students and hope to organise reunions and alumni events to ‘keep in touch’ with those who will always be part of our history!’

  • Teacher Training Success at The Bourne Academy

    The Bourne Academy is delighted to announce that a number of staff have successfully received NQT, RQT & QTS status. The Academy is pleased to have been able to provide these young teachers with the platform to learn teach and progress at the start of their careers. Each of them have worked hard to achieve these qualifications and inspired many students along the way. The Bourne Academy motto ‘Everyone is a learner and everyone is a teacher’ outlines the ethos of the Academy.

  • Joint Rona Trust Sailing Trip for Canford School and The Bourne Academy

    Students from The Bourne Academy joined students from sponsor, Canford school, to participate in a Sail Training Voyage (STV), with The Rona Sailing Project (RSP). The RSP is a volunteer based Sail Training organisation, using the sea as the medium for promoting youth development.

    Three Bourne Academy students joined eight from Canford School for the weeklong trip to sail to various locations on the south coast including: Weymouth, Torquay and Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. They sailed a total of 285 nautical miles with a maximum wind force of 7.

    All three students from The Bourne Academy were delighted to have received a Scott Award: completing a six night STV, and giving their personal best and proving themselves to be keen and reliable members of the crew. They all displayed hard work, dedication and teamwork, and also gained a RYA Competent Crew qualification.

    Throughout the STV all students were active members of the crew, participating in all aspects of running the ship - from sail handing and rope work to navigation, helming and domestic duties on board. As part of their Competent Crew course, they also learned eight different knots, learned sailing terminology and practical sail setting. The students also prepared all food on the trip and they were responsible for keeping the ship clean and tidy.

    Bourne Academy teacher, Sharon McCarthy, accompanied students on the trip and said ‘It was a real pleasure. All students enthusiastically participated in all activities from sail setting and helming to cooking and cleaning. Some great friendships formed as The Bourne Academy and Canford students worked together in two watches sailing the ship an impressive 285 NM along the South Coast. It was great to see students show resilience and not shy away from things they found difficult and personally challenging’.

    Students thoroughly enjoyed the project and have said that they cannot wait to go sailing again.

  • 2nd & 4th places at Regional School Games

    The Bourne Academy is delighted to have sent two talented students to the Regional School Games in Exeter last week; the pair competed eagerly against schools from across the South West.

     

    Both students did extremely well; Isabella competed in the hammer throw, coming fourth place with a result of 41.36m, a new personal best. Isabella is in her final year of Sixth Form and hopes to carry on competing in Athletics events when she starts university next year.

     

    Jenson competed in the High Jump and gained 2nd place after clearing 1.72 meters, making him eligible for English Schools entry standard. Both students were thrilled to have been a part of this event.

     

    Principal of The Bourne Academy, Mark Avoth. says ‘I am incredibly proud of them both; their amazing results are the product of hours of training and hard work - they are a true credit to the Academy’.

  • Greenpower Success!

    The Bourne Academy came 18th out of 57 competing teams in the most recent national Greenpower race and, most notably, the team won ‘Best Presented Team’ overall on the day.

    This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Greenpower Education Trust, a UK based charity inspiring young people to excel in STEM subjects and careers in engineering. The Bourne Academy entered their first Greenpower event in 2012 with the support of the team from Canford, The Bourne Academy’s sponsor school. Canford School bought the first kit car ‘Bourne Bullet’ for The Bourne Academy, kick-starting a fantastic opportunity for students.

    The Bourne Academy’s Greenpower Team attended the season opener race at Goodwood Race in May with their carefully crafted and finely engineered racing car called the ‘Bourne Bobcat’ – this car represents two years of  special design, hard work and self funding – it was built and welded from scratch in the Academy’s engineering workshop.  The team took with them the Academy’s racing mascot ‘Derek the Bobcat’ and bags of team spirit.

    The team entered two races on the day and came 18th place out of 57 teams, competing against private schools and corporates such as Jaguar/BMW –a fantastic result! The team also came home with an award for the ‘Best Presented Team’!  Local company, Kingren Groundworks Limited, has proudly sponsored The Bourne Academy’s Greenpower team, enabling them to purchase branded safety helmets, gloves and racing/pit suits in Academy colours.

    It was an excellent experience for the aspiring engineering students, who attend a Greenpower Club weekly to work on the Academy’s Greenpower car. TED Technician Mark Binstead, who runs the Greenpower Club at the Academy, says ‘All in all an excellent day with the students and car and Derek of course looking amazing. Students were impeccably behaved, professional, and were full of team spirit. As a consequence the judges voted unanimously that the team should be given the Best Presented Team award.’  

    Not only has the recent success attracted further private donations from parents, but another local school has donated two additional chassis for the Academy to develop and use to expand the team. The Bourne Academy Greenpower team are looking forward to the next race in June at Goodwood.

  • Emotional Scenes As Students Receive ‘Proud Letters’

    The Bourne Academy has launched a new initiative to encourage Year 11 students as they reach the summit of learning before GCSE exams begin. At a time when students are really feeling pressure, we wanted to emphasize how proud we are of them.  Last term, we wrote a secret letter to parents/carers letting them know about the initiative and inviting them to write a letter to support their child at this crucial time.

    Parents, carers, siblings, wider families and Academy staff wrote individual letters to each student in Year 11 filled with words of encouragement to support students as they head into the exam season. The ‘proud letters’ were kept confidential, which added to the emotion when they received their surprise letters in an Assembly last week; the letter opening was accompanied by champagne flutes filled with pink lemonade together with specially decorated cupcakes.

    Mrs Leech, Assistant Principal says ‘Our Year 11’s received motivational letters from family and staff letting them know just how proud we are of them both in terms of the effort they have put in over the last two years in the run up to their exams and on what fantastic young people they have become.  As you can imagine this was a very special and somewhat emotional event.  Our thanks go out to everyone who wrote a letter.  This will help spur students on in that last push towards their exams.’

  • Apply Now to Join Dorset Police Cadets at The Bourne Academy

    Young people who want to enjoy fun activities while helping their community are being invited to join the county’s first volunteer police cadet unit.

    The scheme, set up by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset with support from Dorset Police, will be based at The Bourne Academy and will start taking its first recruits this summer.

    People aged 13-18 and from a wide range of backgrounds across Bournemouth are now being invited to come forward.

    Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill said: “Joining the cadets is a fantastic way of boosting your confidence, playing a positive role in your community, but mainly – having a good time.

    “I’ve heard some incredible stories about young people whose lives have been transformed after joining cadet forces in other parts of the country, and I look forward to seeing how teenagers here in Dorset will benefit from this excellent scheme.”

    Cadets will take part in regular sports, fitness and outdoor activities but will also find out about how police officers work – from administering first aid to using a police radio and detecting crimes.

    They will develop leadership skills by taking part in community projects – such as helping older people understand cyber crime, fundraising for local charities and assisting with road safety campaigns.

    Volunteers, recruited by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, will run the unit and will work directly alongside Dorset Police.

    The unit was set up thanks to a £2,500 grant from the national Volunteer Police Cadets’ group. Cadets will be provided with their own uniform but will have to pay £2 weekly subscription to fund activities and events.

    Martyn Underhill added: “Volunteer police cadets aren’t about trying to recruit police officers of the future. Far from it – the unit is a marvellous way of enabling the police to engage with young people and the wider community – as well as giving our young people valuable opportunities to learn and be heard.

    “Although this first unit will be based in Bournemouth, I hope we will be able to set up others across the county in the future.”

    Mark Avoth, Principal of The Bourne Academy, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for young people across Bournemouth to make new friends, build their confidence and learn valuable life skills that will prove invaluable in their future development.

    “I’m proud to be hosting the new cadet unit at The Bourne Academy and I look forward to seeing how the young people who take advantage of this scheme will go on to grow as individuals.”

  • Public Health Dorset Funds Physical Wellbeing Project at The Bourne Academy

    The Bourne Academy is delighted to have secured over £25,000 in funding from Public Health Dorset for its Outdoor Education provision. This funding will develop an ‘Outdoor Education & Survival School’ at the Academy, which will build a cohesive pathway, across the Academy community and curriculum, to develop positive mental and emotional health in young people through outdoor and adventurous activities at the dedicated Academy Outdoor Education Site.

    The Activities of bush craft, adventurous sports and leadership tasks are fundamental challenges that lead to a development of resilience, confidence, wellbeing and self-belief.  The skills that young people develop through Outdoor Education are transferable to everyday life and academic challenges.

    This project will reach further than to just the Academy’s own students as the project is set to host guests from local primary schools to join this learning pathway – starting the wellbeing process at an even younger age. Activities will increase confidence, boost positive mental health, inspire resilient attitudes to challenges and instill a deeper understanding of teamwork across all ages, genders and ethnic groups.

  • Valencia Trip 2019

    The Valencia trip was filled with excellent cultural experiences for students. On the first full day in Valencia the group walked 17km around the city sightseeing before ending the day with some free time on the beach to build sandcastles.

    In the days that followed the group went to ‘Museu Faller de Valencia’ to learn about a traditional festival of fire which welcomes the spring to the city every year, then a boat trip on Albufera lake, the largest lake in Spain.

    One of the most memorable experiences was a paella workshop, the group went to the market to buy and learn about the key ingredients to make a traditional Valencian paella, the famous Spanish dish originates from the Valencia region.

    The Students were all well behaved and enthusiastic. I think we all had a very enjoyable time on the trip! ‘I loved the Valencia trip and I am so thankful I was invited to go on it. My favourite part was the boat trip!’ Tiffany.
