  • The Bourne Academy’s Community Lettings Model is Nationally Applauded by Sport England

    Published 25/05/21

The Bourne Academy is delighted to be nationally recognised and applauded by Sport England, for its successful model of Community Lettings.  This follows a successful project driven by Active Dorset.

In Phase 1 of the Opening Schools Facilities project, Active Dorset was one of 19 pilot projects commissioned by Sport England to deliver the Opening Schools Facilities project between October 2019 and December 2020, as outlined in the Government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan July 2019.

During that time, Active Dorset co-produced a case study about The Bourne Academy’s successful journey to increase the opening up of school facilities out of hours. Sport England wanted to share good practice and learning from Phase 1, so this February they commissioned the Active Partnership network to create a series of short animated videos of a few case studies.  We’re very proud to say that The Bourne Academy’s case study was selected for this and the film is able to be viewed online, link here. The Bourne Academy is proud of its collaboration with Active Partnership in engaging with the community and transforming lives through sport and physical activity.

The Bourne Academy has become fully established as a community hub and is held in high regard within the community. The Bourne Academy was selected to be the base of the Dorset’s first Police Cadet Unit in 2019. The Academy has also hosted bespoke events such as weddings, conferences and high-profile events such as a recording of BBC Radio 4s Kitchen Cabinet.

The Academy has state of the art facilities, including a multi-use games area (MUGA), dance studio, cookery classrooms, media suite and various sporting facilities. These facilities are available to be hired by community clubs, for functions, parties, or corporate events.

If you are interested in hiring The Bourne Academy’s facilities, you can find morn information on their website, www.thebourneacademy.com/communitylettings

  • The Bourne Academy completes 6040 Mile Virtual Journey to Partner School in Kenya

    Published 21/05/21

The Bourne Academy is delighted to have completed a 6040 mile virtual journey to partner, Osiligi Obaya Primary School in  Kenya. Staff and Students have travelled this distance by walking, running, cycling, inline skating, rowing, playing football and Pokémon go, swimming and skateboarding.

In light of National Lockdown and worldwide travel restrictions, The Bourne Academy launched a virtual challenge to make the journey from Bournemouth to its partner school in Kenya. The aim was for staff and students, to clock up the 6040 mileage from Hadow Road, Bournemouth to the Osiligi Obaya School in Kenya, using any mode of sustainable transport they wish.

Those taking part have not only completed the virtual journey, taking them through 12 countries in Europe and Africa, but they have also travelled so far over the target mileage that they could have also made it to South Africa…

‘Osiligi’ means hope, and the hope for this project is to bring us all a little closer together in a time when the world feels very disconnected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mark Avoth, Principal, commented: ‘We are so proud of everyone who has taken part in the virtual challenge. This journey has been so inspiring to our community and encouraged our students to get out and exercise during the second lockdown. The project has also kept our partner school, Osiligi Obaya, in the forefront of our minds during the pandemic and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to this massive group effort’.

  • Bourne Academy Girls Active Leaders Squad

    Published 14/05/21

The Bourne Academy is delighted to have launched their first Girls Active group in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust. The Programme aims to increase participation in Sport and Physical Activity across the Academy, but particularly for girls.

Year 8 students were selected for the group, as this is the age range where physical activity tends to decrease in girls. The group has shown so much enthusiasm for the project and called themselves GALS, standing for Girls Active Leaders Squad.  GALS have created their own brand and logo as well as establishing an after-school sports club – the students are proving to be excellent role models for school sport.

Mark Avoth, Principal, says ‘We are so proud of the group and the initiative, the GALS are a real inspiration to all our students’.

  • The Bourne Academy Receives Laptop Donation

    Published 14/05/21

The Bourne Academy is delighted and extremely grateful to local company, Summit Land & Developments, for the donation of four brand new laptops. The laptops were distributed during the most recent national lockdown, to help the Academies families in need.

Caroline Gobell, Business Director at The Bourne Academy, said: ‘We were absolutely thrilled and grateful to have received these donated laptops from Summit Land & Developments. The Laptops made a huge difference to some of our students who had limited access to remote learning while working from home. Many families struggled during the national lockdown and these laptops proved to be lifelines, taking the pressure off family life as a whole, as well as preventing the widening of a gap between those children with enough resources at home, and those with nothing.  This sort of difference is lifechanging’.
