Planning Ahead
Long-listing careers ideas
During Year 9 and Year 10 it is important to start meaningful careers conversations. Key questions to discuss:
- What are your passions? E.g. aeroplanes, children, animals, justice, music.
- Could these passions be a career or a hobby for life?
- What could you see yourself doing from all the different industries or jobs that you have seen or heard of?
- Could you create a list (10 or so) of those possible careers?

Start early
It is important not to leave decisions for post-16 educational pathways too late:
- Schools and Colleges open their courses for Year 12 (first year of Sixth Form) in September of Year 11.
- Many courses will fill up by Christmas and waiting lists will be the only option.
- Apprenticeships to start in September after Year 11 are usually advertised between January and May, CVs/Cover letters etc need to be ready to go ahead of January.
